Personal statement

I am an aspiring costume designer with an interest in contemporary and innovative theatre that pushes boundaries. I aim to create visually stimulating costumes which convey the narrative and setting in a genuine way. My main interest lies in the construction of costumes and the small details behind the whole piece. I enjoy the process of creating a costume and how it contributes to bring alive a character on stage. My experience includes Assistant Costume Designer for the production Scenes from 68* Years at the Arcola theatre where I was responsible for designing and sourcing the costumes for the show as well as carrying out minor alterations and fittings with the cast. I also was part of the design team for a production of 42nd Street by Geoids Musical Theatre Company at the Bridewell theatre. This design team was responsible for creating a model box of our proposed design and presenting it. We also constructed the main elements of the set as well as creating a costume look book to assist with the sourcing of costumes.

Strengths

I would consider my main strengths to be in pattern drafting and costume construction as these are the areas I find the most satisfying in my projects. I possess good sewing skills with both domestic and industrial machines as well as hand sewing. I also have a good eye for detail as well as a logical and inventive mindset. I hold a range of construction abilities including tailoring, dyeing, distressing, embroidery and a particular flair in textile embellishment. Whilst costume is my main area of focus, I also have a good knowledge of set design which I would consider one of my strengths that I have developed as well as a basic knowledge of set construction that works alongside the costume specialism.
